Graphic programs appeared on the market quite a long time ago, but in their beginnings hardly anyone saw the tools that will be widely used by engineers and scientists . First of all, the first graphic programs were quite simple, they did not use three dimensions, and in many cases the whole thing was just a curiosity. As with everything, however, these programs evolved quickly, and the breakthrough was the ability to generate and process 3D elements and motion.

First applications in engineering graphics
One of the first graphics programs for engineers was the famous Autocad. In it, you could first create technical drawings of buildings, and in subsequent versions, model them in three dimensions. This tool (in its first versions) had a substitute for the current possibilities, but it still revolutionized the process of designing buildings. In Autocad, you can have all building plans in one file on different meshes, they can be quickly changed and printed. In a word, the graphic program Autocad made construction engineers and architects moved almost from the Middle Ages to the present day.

Graphics software – application development
The success of the first versions of Autocad made both designers and software companies want to create a graphics program that would go beyond the construction field. It is worth mentioning that Auto CAD at that time allowed for the first simulations and analyzes to see if the drawing was done correctly. Such a case, however, posed much greater problems. The first focus was on mechanics. In mechanics, however, there are definitely more moving parts, the forces are distributed over many more planes, factors such as temperature and pressure play a much greater role. The sheer amount of materials that can be used is enormous. Without going into details, it should only be said that thanks to the joint efforts of the mechanics, physicists and computer scientists managed to do this titanic work. This gave the obvious foundations for the plethora of programs that were then created.
What are the possibilities of modern engineering graphic programs?
Contemporary graphic programs have enormous possibilities. First of all, their main role is currently creating models and simulating how it will behave under given conditions. We are talking about the possibility of virtual testing of individual components and entire systems or machines. We can freely change the parameters of work, material and external factors. The range of possibilities is really huge and you need to be an expert in a given field to be able to fully exhaust the potential. It is also worth mentioning that in addition to the fields of science and technology such as the aforementioned architecture and mechanics, graphic programs support even more advanced fields, such as research on elementary particles.
Is the engineering program infallible?
Of course, simulations carried out in engineering graphics programs are subject to some error. This error is as big as one thinks about modern mathematical description of certain physical phenomena . We have to be aware that every physical theory and equation is an attempt to mathematically frame an actual physical phenomenon. However, this is often only possible with a certain approximation. Virtual simulators help us at work, but we must not trust them completely.
So, can engineering programs be trusted?
Regardless of whether we are building a new engine, testing a new roof structure or checking the amount of energy contained in a grain of sand, we always have to perform tests on real models after simulation. This is an essential requirement. Virtual simulations – even if they are not perfect, help us to make the mistakes we make as small as possible. Thanks to this, we can conduct many studies much faster.
What is the main influence of such graphics programs?
These graphics programs have a major impact on the cost of conducting research and the speed of research. Please note that the creation of any project is long-term. Then, on its basis, a prototype is built (usually on a small scale, then larger and larger). Any mistakes made during the design phase and not detected in time will delay the final completion of the work. Engineering programs tested and refined over the years have shortened by up to 70% the time of completing projects from the “drawing board” to mass production. At the same time, design defects or manufacturing defects resulting from incorrect design of the production process are detected during use much less frequently in the final product.
