What should we know about bank safe deposit boxes? There is no denying that today bank safe deposit boxes are becoming more and more popular. This type of place is considered very safe, which is probably why so many people are interested in this topic. Can a foreigner set up a box? What items can be kept in a stash and which are prohibited? Is it possible to open a locker without our consent?

The answers to these questions can be found in the following article, which we cordially invite all interested readers to read.

Can a foreigner set up a safe deposit box?

The answer to this question is affirmative. Before we decide to use the locker, we should be aware that this solution can be used by both natural persons who are over 18 years of age, as well as legal persons, and even entities without legal personality. Bank safes are also available to foreigners, and only a valid passport will be necessary. The Pole, however, must show his ID card.

As you can see, the formalities are minimized, which is why many people are not afraid to try this solution. As a curiosity, it is worth mentioning that the lease agreement can be signed by more than one person. It is also possible to appoint a proxy, but this requires a written form. Consequently, both people will have access to the content.

What if the power of attorney is revoked? Then there will be no need to replace the lock. Moreover, any replacement costs are borne by the tenant, who must also be present at the operation. Every landlord should be aware that after death, the contents of the safe deposit box are made available to the heirs.

Do’s and don’ts, or what we can keep in a safe and what we can’t

Probably each of us has watched movies and TV series in which criminals stored illegal substances, bombs, as well as weapons and ammunition in bank safes. Is it possible in reality? As a rule, when signing a rental contract, we can find detailed information about what items can be hidden in a locker. In most cases, these are, for example, securities, documents, precious metals, works of art, sculptures, books, collectors’ items, as well as other valuable items that are particularly important to us.

So what are we not allowed to put in a safe deposit box? Such items include; weapons, drugs, explosives, criminal items, and perishable food items. If any of these items ends up inside the safe, and employees notice such an incident, then the contract will certainly be terminated.

In practice, however, this is unlikely due to the fact that when filling or emptying the storage compartment in the room, we are completely alone.

Opening a locker without our consent – is it even possible?

Are you wondering if it is possible to open a bank safe deposit box without your consent? Many people believe that only the owner has access to the interior. Unfortunately, in practice it looks completely different.

It turns out that Polish law provides for certain situations in which the bank will be forced to open a bank safe deposit box. If criminal proceedings are conducted against us, then some services, such as the Police, Border Guard or prosecutor’s office, may force bank employees to open the safe deposit box.

Interestingly, the bailiff may also have access to the box if the person has a problem with enforcement proceedings. Do you think it’s over? Nothing could be more wrong. The bank may also open a safe deposit box, but only in exceptional circumstances. Such incidents may occur when the rental period expires and we do not pay money to extend the contract. If we are still using a bank safe, the bank will first ask us to return the keys.

If we do not react appropriately, then the box will be opened without our consent. What about its content? It will be deposited.

Bank safe deposit box – is it safe?

Why do we choose bank safe deposit boxes? They seem to us to be the safest solution. Is it really so? Polish law regulates that the bank is responsible for protecting the safe deposit box. Therefore, if an unpleasant incident occurs, for example in the form of a fire, robbery or flood, then the bank is forced to compensate for the losses incurred. Already at the stage of signing the contract, we should pay attention to the amount of compensation.

In most cases, it is the value of several dozen national averages. In the case of even more valuable items, additional insurance of the contents is possible. Documentation should be prepared for this purpose. Then the amount paid in the event of any adverse incident will be much higher. Therefore, we can say that by choosing a bank safe deposit box, we can feel completely safe. Even in the event of loss of content, we will receive a high monetary compensation.
